Epirus, a defense tech startup, has secured $250 million in Series D funding to counter drone swarms. The company, based in Torrance, California, specializes in anti-drone systems and has won several U.S. military contracts, including a $66 million deal with the Army in 2023. Epirus' flagship product, Leonidas, uses high-powered electromagnetic pulses to disable drones. The funding round was co-led by 8VC and Washington Harbour Partners LP, with participation from other investors such as Gaingels and General Dynamics Land Systems. This brings the total amount raised by Epirus to over $550 million, solidifying its status as a unicorn. The company plans to use the funds to expand into international and commercial markets, grow its team, and improve its supply chain resiliency. Epirus' technology is seen as a key solution to the growing threat of drone swarms, which can be used for surveillance, sabotage, or other malicious purposes. The company's co-founder, Joe Lonsdale, touted Leonidas as the "best protection against drone swarms today." With this new funding, Epirus is well-positioned to continue developing and deploying its anti-drone technology to meet the needs of military and commercial clients.
